In this class, we will etch shells using similar methods as the Hohokam used in the past. Students will carve their original design into a wax or pitch-covered shell surface that we will submerge in an acidic solution. This solution will incise the designed exposed surface while the resin or pitch protects the rest of the shell. Once the etching is complete, an ochre pigment will be available at the end to emphasize your etching.
Class is limited to six people, and kids aged ten and up are welcome. We will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will end around noon. Masks are not required as we will be outside.
