Archaeology Southwest is a private 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, on the homelands of the Tohono O’odham Nation and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. In our workplace and activities, we are striving for inclusion across race, gender, age, religion, and identity. We are supported through donations and grants from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

For a more comprehensive look at our goals and methods of achieving them, review our 2022–2024 strategic plan.

We practice Preservation Archaeology, a holistic and conservation-based approach to exploring and protecting heritage places while honoring their diverse values. We compile archaeological information, make it accessible and understandable, share it with the public and decision-makers, advocate for landscape-scale protection, and steward heritage properties and conservation easements. We are committed to real and ongoing collaboration with Indigenous communities.

We hope you share our vision, which is that heritage places, ancestral landscapes, and associated knowledge and values are stewarded, protected, respected, and celebrated across the US and the world.

Come along as we learn more about how people lived in these arid environments, how and why cultures changed through time, and what has endured. Attend our Archaeology Café series to find out more about current research and thinking in Southwestern archaeology—and beyond.

Support our low-impact investigations, which rely on existing archaeological data and minimal or no excavation at sites that aren’t threatened right now. We’re proud to host cyberSW, which is an important part of the future of archaeological research.

Experience the sights and sounds of the past as never before through our Hands-On Archaeology activities.

Connect with the latest research and news in Southwestern archaeology and Preservation Archaeology through our website, newsletters, and award-winning publication, Archaeology Southwest Magazine.

Help us protect archaeological sites and cultural landscapes throughout the Southwest by supporting our powerful conservation toolkit, advocacy initiatives, and community and institutional partnerships.

Together, we are making a difference. By looking forward and acting now, we ensure that heritage places, ancestral landscapes, and associated knowledge are better stewarded and protected, more profoundly valued and respected, and truly celebrated.

Join us today. We’re making a difference—with you at our side.

For a more comprehensive look at our goals and methods of achieving them, review our 2022–2024 strategic plan.
