The Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to recording and protecting the sacred landscape of Mesa Prieta, a place inhabited by humans for 10,000 years and containing an estimated 100,000 petroglyphs. Our ongoing recording work has revealed that this petroglyph site, a 36 square-mile mesa, has the largest concentration of petroglyphs in New Mexico.

The mission of the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project is to record, preserve and educate. Our volunteers record petroglyphs, train to become tour docents, and participate in our extensive education programs.

The Project offers tours of the Wells Petroglyph Preserve, located midway between Santa Fe and Taos. These 181-acres of Mesa Prieta were donated by the Project’s founder Katherine Wells and contain over 10,000 petroglyphs. Our docents lead our visitors through an insightful 2-hour tour of archaic, Ancestral Pueblo, and Historic period petroglyphs. Private and weekly public tours available with pre-registration.
