EVENT: Ancient Farmers of Tucson
DATE/TIME: May 5, 2009, at 6:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Casa Vicente, 375 S. Stone Avenue, Tucson, AZ.
In a follow-up session to Jonthan Mabry’s introduction to the first agricultural villages in the region, this Archaeology Café panel focused on the site of Las Capas. Archaeologist Jim Vint and geoarchaeologist Fred Nials shared up-to-the-minute information from recent excavations at the Las Capas site, which was found along the Santa Cruz River. Pima County Cultural Resources and Historic Preservation Program Coordinator Loy Neff provided information on the history of the project. Amazingly, investigations have revealed complex agricultural irrigation systems that date back 3,000 years! The remarkably well-preserved fields even retain evidence of planting holes for maize and other crops. The project was also featured in a segment on KUAT’s nightly newsmagazine, Arizona Illustrated.
