Description

The Tanque Verde Wash site was a small agricultural settlement located in the eastern Tucson Basin, some 25 km east of the large prehistoric villages along the Santa Cruz River. The northwest locus of the site was investigated for the City of Tucson prior to residential development, complementing previous investigations in the southeast locus. Archaeological research focused on the household, the basic Hohokam economic and social unit. Occupation of the site began during the Rillito phase (A.D. 850-950) and continued into the transitional Late Rincon/Tanque Verde phase (A.D. 1100-1200). The most intensive occupation was during the Middle Rincon phase, and particularly the Middle Rincon 2 and 3 subphases (A.D. 1040-1100).

Technical Report No. 2007-01 discusses the excavation of 36 pithouses, 243 pits, 6 trash areas, and 34 human mortuary features. These data are combined with results of prior investigations to reconstruct the occupation of the Tanque Verde Wash site and the prehistoric settlement of the eastern Tucson Basin. This research suggests that patterns seen along the better studied Santa Cruz River area also occur in the eastern basin, where numerous dispersed Middle Rincon settlements aggregate into fewer but larger sites during the late Sedentary/early Classic period.
