Archaeology Making the News – A Service of the Center for Desert Archaeology

– REPOST: Public Lecture (Springerville, AZ): On Saturday, July 16th, the Center for Desert Archaeology is pleased to present Dr. Scott Van Keuren speaking on the prehistory of East Central Arizona. Dr Keuren’s lecture will provide a context for a discussion about ways to interpret the past in the Little Colorado River Basin. “Rediscovering Fourteenth Century Pueblo Villages in East Central Arizona” will be presented at 7:00 pm at the Casa Malpais Visitor’s Center and Museum on 318 East Main Street, Springerville, Arizona. This event is made possible by a generous grant from the Arizona Humanities Council.

– Much More Than Doodling: Northern Arizona University professor Kelley Hays-Gilpin looks at rock art in her book “Ambiguous Images: Gender and Rock Art,” which recently received the Society of American Archaeology book award. The book challenges the reader to set aside preconceived notions when interpreting images.

– State of Nevada Honors Three Carson Valley Ranches: Stodieck Farm, Laura Springs Ranch, Heise Family Ranch received the Centennial Ranch and Farm Award. The award is a metal sign designating the property as a Nevada Centennial Ranch and Farm.

– “From Above: Images of a Storied Land,” an exhibition of Adriel Heisey’s aerial photographs featuring southwestern archaeology, opens at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 16th. The exhibit runs through October 2, 2005.
