  • Exploring the Edge, March 1–2
By Lewis Borck, Preservation Archaeology Fellow
Lewis Borck

Preparations for Edge of Salado research (click on that link to learn more) have been underway for the past month:

Visiting Sites
Visiting sites in the Coyote Mountains and the Sulphur Springs Valley with Bill Doelle to prepare for the excavation crews.
Collecting Sand Samples
Ceramic provenance and technology expert Mary Ownby collected samples of various sands from washes in the region to help us determine where ceramics were being produced.

Excavations began two weekends ago in the Sulphur Springs Valley:

And we often had company!

We continued this past weekend in the Coyote Mountains at a platform mound–compound community.

Preservation Fellow Lewis Borck leads our fieldwork and a team of volunteers. You can follow along at lsborck on Instagram, @LewisBorck on Twitter, and at Archaeology Southwest’s Facebook page.

Lunch in the Coyote Mountains
Lunches are a community affair and usually involve decent food, dirty fingers, and great people. This weekend, someone even brought homemade brownies. Photo by Steve Cox.
Finishing a Unit
Checking the last level prior to closing the unit because it became sterile (there was no more cultural material in it). Photo by Steve Cox.
