Site Summary: Called Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac, this Spanish fortress was constructed in 1752. The fort held 50 cavalry men to protect Spanish interests in the region, as well as to serve as a base for further Spanish exploration of New Spain. The presidio was abandoned in 1776 when its garrison was moved to Tucson.
