Description

Results of Phase 1 Data Recovery at AZ EE:1:349 (ASM), Component B, Sahuarita, Pima County, Arizona (TR2008-11) (PDF)

Component B of EE:1:349 meets eligibility requirements of the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D based on the presence of historic-period surface artifacts and subsurface features that indicate the presence of household-level occupation during the first half of the twentieth century. Significance is further enhanced by archival research. Although not attributable to a single owner/family, occupation of Component B is associated with lessees who were significant to the development of Sahuarita and its history of settlement and land use, and possibly the Mexican immigration into the United States.

Intensive Phase 1 data recovery excavations identified no significant subsurface deposits within the proposed road alignment, which is considered the Area of Potential Effect for the project. Therefore, construction of the road as currently planned will not affect the National Register-eligibility of Component B, EE:1:349. It is recommended that construction within the right-of-way proceed as planned. Significant surface and subsurface features, including a concrete foundation and trash pits, occur adjacent to the project right-ofway. Any changes in the project plans or any future development activities that affect this area would need to be evaluated and may require further data recovery investigtions.
