Petrographic Analysis of Babocomari Polychrome Pottery from the Garden Canyon Site, AZ EE:11:13 (ASM), Located on the Fort Huachuca Military Reservation, Cochise County, Arizona (TR 2005-104)

100 Babocomari Polychrome sherds were submitted for temper analysis to assess their temper content and characterzie their temper provenance. This polychrome is thought to have been manufactured in the San Pedro Valley, although the exact production location is not know since no comparative collection or systematic study has explored the production of this ware. To this end, the 100 sherds, most from the unprovenienced collection (site-level provenience is the Garden Canyon site) at the Arizona State Museum, were examined under the binocular stereomicroscope to assess the nature of the temper. They were then compared to known sand samples from the San Pedro Valley to characterize their provenance.
