Archaeological Investigations of the Tucson Pressed Brick Company, Tucson, Arizona

Archaeological Investigations of the Tucson Pressed Brick Company, Tucson, Arizona (TR1996-13)

The City of Tucson’s plans to install a drainage system from the base of A-Mountain to the Santa Cruz River resulted in excavations documenting the prehistoric and historic occupation of the flood plain. Portions of the Tucson Pressed Brick Company, in operation from 1890 to 1963, were explored. The company manufactured bricks used in many structures throughout Tucson and neighboring communities. Petrographic analysis of bricks was conducted and revealed that individual brick batches could be identified. Archival materials allowed for a reconstruction of the company history as well as a study of the changing attitudes about building materials in Tucson.
