- An Interview with Oscar, Preservation Archaeology ...
Archaeology Southwest Magazine editor-in-chief Kate Sarther spoke with Oscar on January 23, 2026.
Kate: Thanks for sitting down with me today, Oscar.
Oscar: I’ll just get in your lap.
Kate: Aw, thanks, buddy. OK, so, how did you become our office dog?
Oscar: I am getting old and I like to be with my people. My dad Josh works here. I have a bed right by his desk.
Kate: What is your favorite thing about coming to work?
Oscar: Snacks.
Oscar: Also scritches.
Kate: Was that a hint?
Oscar: Yes.
Oscar: Did I mention snacks?
Kate: You did. Was THAT a hint?
Oscar: Yes.

Kate: Fortunately, I came prepared.
Oscar: I love you. I wag my tail, see?
Kate: I love you, too, buddy. You get a big shoutout as our office therapy dog in the new issue of our magazine, did you know that?
Oscar: No! Wow.
Kate: Yes, and remember coming to our Archaeology Cafe talks about dogs? There was cheese there?
Oscar: Cheese. Yes.
Kate: Oh, you’re using the eyes on me…! Have another snack.
Oscar: Thank you.
Kate: So, how do you feel about being featured in the magazine?
Oscar: Good. Does that mean more snacks?
Kate: Probably. Does it bother you that we all seek you out and give you so much love? Are we needy and annoying?
Oscar: No. I like people! They give me snacks and stroke my ears.
Kate: Is that a hint?
Oscar: Yes.
Kate: Happy to comply. Thanks for this interview, and thanks for being you!
Oscar: You’re welcome.
