Community House?

Community HouseThis pithouse is much larger than any other homes or storage rooms at the Clearwater site.

Many archaeologists infer that these rooms are “community houses,” or rooms used for religious practice, much like kivas are used by Puebloan peoples today.

An alternate interpretation is that this structure was occupied by a village leader who needed extra space for storage or symbolic reasons. Further research at Early Agricultural period sites could shed more light upon the function of these “big rooms.”

No matter what their ancient function, it is clear that the big room or community house is common to villages in this time period.
