Deep Time Depth

Hohokam Pit HouseThis final pithouse image illustrates the tremendous time depth present at the Clearwater site.

Almost all of the homes excavated at the site date to sometime between 2400 and 4100 years ago. However,  in the soil layers above the 400 B.C. occupation of the site, there are also pithouses and canals from the Hohokam era, built only 1400 years ago.

The narrow ditch that is visible on either side of the pithouse impression is from the trench that archaeologists used to find the house impression for excavation.
