Archaeological Investigations of a Chinese Gardener's Household, Tucson, Arizona (TR1996-22)
Excavations beneath Spruce Street uncovered a rock foundation and other features associated with a Chinese gardener's household. A large number of Chinese artifacts were recovered from trash-filled pits and date from 1892 to 1905. The artifacts indicate that the gardeners replaced traditional ceramics with Euro-American vessels that closely matched in form. Diet was reconstructed through analysis of ethnobotanical, faunal, and food vessel materials. The gardeners sought to recreate their traditional diet using familiar and unfamiliar food sources. This is the first Chinese gardeners' household explored by archaeologists in Tucson.
