This bowl represents an ancient ceramic tradition that archaeologists call St. Johns Polychrome. The bowl was found in trash deposits at Salmon Ruin in Room 33-B, a small space next to a kiva. This pottery type dates from the end of the San Juan Period, and was probably made in northeastern Arizona sometime between A.D. 1250 and 1280.

The Center for Desert Archaeology has spent the past ten years in partnership with the Salmon Ruins Museum, working to preserve and understand collections from this important ancient village. You can read more about this research here.
