This object represents a ceramic formed to represent some type of animal figure; such objects are generally referred to as “effigy” vessels. Many archaeologists think the object depicts a lizard. This lizard effigy was recovered from the late San Juan period (ca. 1250–1280) floor of Salmon’s Tower Kiva. The structure burned in the A.D. 1280s, and people began to migrate away from Salmon Pueblo shortly thereafter.

The Center for Desert Archaeology has spent the past ten years in partnership with the Salmon Ruins Museum, working to preserve and understand collections from this important ancient village. You can read more about this research here.
