Gallup Black-on-white Pitcher
This pitcher represents an ancient ceramic tradition that archaeologists call Gallup Black-on-white. The vessel was found during excavations at Salmon Pueblo in room 98, which was probably used for storage and habitation. This pottery type dates to the Chacoan period, and was probably made near Chaco Canyon sometime between A.D. 1090 and 1125.
The Center for Desert Archaeology has spent the past ten years in partnership with the Salmon Ruins Museum, working to preserve and understand collections from this important ancient village. You can read more about this research here.
